Atamans work is pretty impressive and you can definitely tell that the work he produces really has a deep meaning to him. When reading about Women who wear wigs I thought the women he chose to expose was interesting (i.e. a chemotherapy patient to a prostitute). I really enjoyed the section were Ataman is compared to Freud and his ideas on personality and forgotten material, because Atamans work describes ones identity and challenges if it is of the “true self”. I really appreciated Testimony (2006) because he attempted to preserve the woman who was senile with images to resuscitate her memory. Here he also refers to himself and the Freudian other because he is trying to bring the submerged past back to light. Something that inspired me and that I really liked was how in most of his pieces he focuses on “imitating that if our obsessions trap us physically or emotionally, they frequently liberate us imaginatively”. His work really inspires me to dig a little deeper and figure out what makes up my identity, Atamans work makes you realize that whether it’s good or bad it is all part of my true self.

Kelley Response-----

When I first started reading this article I was impress by all of the talents Mike Kelley had in the art world  even though his work is described as “provocative” he created pieces in all different forms such as  performances, paintings , music, sculptures and installations. I think its petty awesome that everyone throughout his entire career came to support his gallery even if he wasn’t going to be there.  It is apparent how much his death shocked the art world because of all the shrines and galleries that went up in memory of him; he obviously had amazing work and a great impact on the people he worked with. I was kind of blown away by how much fortune his art works brought him and yet he stayed a humble man. It is a shame to read that he could not control his anxiety and stress and as the world demanded more from him the worst it became. His suicide was horrible to read about and I have a picture in my mind that I really don’t want there. It made me really sad to read that he would tell people he was miserable and depressed but he couldn’t get help from rehab or friends.

Today's crit was really interesting I think everyone's pieces showed a lot of thought and everyone had great ideas. What I learned most about my work is that I could have edited my scanned drawing a little better. the line work did not turn out the way I imagined it to be.  I think what I struggled with the most was editing my images and not having a clear memory of all the tools. The piece that had the kid sitting on top of a pile of money could have had a more professional appeal to it rather than my hand drawn work. Over all my concept and idea was portrayed pretty clearly to this class and they seemed to pick up on my ideas right away. Today's crit also showed me just how important text really is and the unconscious emotional effects it has on people. My choice I text didn't come easy and I believe I could have tweaked my one images text a little more. I am really happy that I was able to make these posters and get my ideas across because this project was a struggle for me.

While reading this article I couldn't help but laugh. As sad as it is that someone would be heartless enough to trick people into buying something that isn't what they think it is, it's a seriously clever move. I never really thought about how much we trust packaging at markets and the faith we have in companies that things are legit what they claim to be. For the most part they are but after reading this article it definitely is going to make me second guess some organic food I may buy.

After watching “Helvetica” it made me realize really just how much text surrounds me on a day to day basis. I never even realized that all of these companies logos and signs use Helvetica but since watching the film it has brought to my attention that Helvetica is literally everywhere. It also made me realize that people probably never really think about how much thought goes into choosing a text design. Every little details is considered such as, space between letters, the negative space, or the shaes inside the letters, they all matter. The man in the first scene talks about AmericanAirlines and how they are the only airline that has not changed their text or logo in forty years and he claims it’s because they are already the best because they use Helvetica. Helvetica is a standard, neutral text that is used for many different things because it offers clarity and legibility to the viewer. The shapes within characters and the negative spaces between all matter and play a large role in keeping the text legible, neutral, and smooth. Helvetica leaves an open interpretation for the viewer which makes it more accessible to the viewer. One man in the film states “the way something is presented defines the way you react to it,” and I could not agree more; text really does impact the viewer and stirs emotions. Towards the end of the film it shows many new artists and graphic designers thought Helvetica was boring they were more experimental with text and type face texts. These designers were looking for something new; they didn’t know what they just knew they didn’t like Helvetica. Then there is some artist who put their own twist on Helvetica to give it their own uniqueness while still keeping the original font as a guide. Regardless of these new typefaces or new designers Helvetica is an original text that is still and will always be used globally.

I think that my critique went very well. I learned that placing a warming photo filter over the entire piece was a good choice and made the image very cohesive. Some of the photos of myself the lighting was a little off and that is probably the thing that annoyed the class the most. If i could change anything I would take photos of myself in a more natural light. I also might play with the perspective of the background image a little more, to make the space seem more real. I am happy that the class got a "funky" feel from my piece because I did aim for that when i changed the colors of buildings and contrasted the purple sky to the orange in the warming filter. Overall I am happy with the things the class had to say about my image. I am really excited about how my piece turned out!

Response to article (never posted it on the blog)
It is pretty awesome to realize that even though these artists weren't depicting the actual battle field, they were doing it through landscapes and symbolism. The volcano had several meanings in each piece and even matched up with an old poem from those times.

I watched two different tutorial one on how to use the magnetic lasso tool to select certain parts of an image and I also watched a tutorial on how to flatten an image so it all becomes on layer and you can edit as a whole.

I took one of my friend's nephew and put him in a King's chair... "Braidyn the Boss"

1.  I use a computer everyday for basic things such as email, papers, or social media but my previous computer experience with any art program is not so recent. I last had a photoshop class in 10th grade.

2. I hope to get a clear understanding of how to successfully work the tools inside each of the programs we use in this course.

3. The relationship between VS and computers is that  things can be altered by the click of a mouse to enhance things to be visually more appealing to some people...which is pretty awesome.

4. Something interesting about myself is that I have a big scar on my leg because my bed spring popped through my mattress and cut me!
